BPD is a world-wide network of partners involving government, business, civil society and donors.

Small-Scale Providers of Water and Sanitation Services

To many millions of the urban and rural poor, small-scale operators who sell water and occasionally provide sanitation are a vital service.  The role of these providers, who often operate in the informal private sector, has gained increased attention in recent times, with more policymakers recognising them as a valuable link to otherwise unserved communities.

Since cross-sector partnerships that bring water and sanitation to the poor are central to BPD's work, we are very interested in findings on this topic and improving ways to work through these individuals and small enterprises, to enhance the services poor communities receive.

BPD is in the process of developing this portal, to promote a wider understanding of the role and potential of such small providers and to share the work of other individuals and organisations who have shown an interest and enthusiasm for the topic.

Sanitation Entrepreneurs Roundtable

At the end of April 2009, BPD convened a roundtable in London to discuss how best to engage entrepreneurs in urban sanitation delivery. Thirty-five individuals actively participated and met directly with entrepreneurs from Malawi, Ghana, Senegal and Uganda to discuss different approaches to their business. Lessons from other small and medium enterprise experiences also challenged our thinking.

Completed Research

In 2007, BPD completed research with AfD (and Hydroconseil) that looks at the role of independent network operators in providing water services to those who have traditionally struggled to obtain access. Work in Mali, Mauritania, Ghana and Mozambique led to ongoing dialogue around the issue in each country and a set of case studies.

Support to Partnership Projects

Part of BPD's mandate is to provide non-financial support to partnership projects.  We are especially keen to hear of any projects (nascent or ongoing) involving small-scale providers that would be interested in receiving our support.
